Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), the Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking, has secured a significant new contract worth Rs 1,251 crore (excluding taxes) from the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, for the supply of Ground Based Mobile ELINT System (GBMES) to the Indian Army.
What Is GBMES?
The GBMES — Ground Based Mobile Electronic Intelligence System — is a fully indigenous, state-of-the-art system designed and developed by the Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL), Hyderabad. BEL is the manufacturing partner responsible for production and delivery.
The system is a networked intelligence platform capable of:
- Detecting, classifying and locating all types of radars
- Intercepting and analysing all communication signals
- Significantly enhancing situational awareness for the Indian Army
- Strengthening air defence capabilities of the country
The GBMES works through a networked architecture of three Receiving Stations and one Control Station, with a repeater radio link extending operational range. It is designed for modern battlefield scenarios where information dominance is critical.
Why This Order Matters
This contract aligns directly with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliance) push in defence manufacturing. The system has a minimum of 72% indigenous content and is procured under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category — Indian, Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured.
For BEL, this order further expands its already healthy defence order book. The company disclosed the contract through a regulatory filing on May 5, 2026.
BEL’s Recent Financial Performance
BEL’s most recent quarterly results (Q3 FY26) showed standalone net profit jumping 20.81% to Rs 1,590 crore on a 23.72% rise in revenue to Rs 7,122 crore. The company has consistently delivered strong results and has been a beneficiary of India’s rising defence capital expenditure.
Stock Reaction
BEL shares rose 0.63% to Rs 436.45 on BSE on the day of the announcement. The stock has been a strong performer in the defence PSU space and has attracted consistent institutional interest given the government’s focus on expanding the defence budget.
Order Pipeline Remains Strong
Beyond this Rs 1,251 crore order, BEL has a robust pipeline of defence electronics contracts across radar systems, communication equipment, electronic warfare, and naval electronics. The growing India-specific defence budget and the push to replace imported systems with indigenous alternatives continues to be a strong structural tailwind for the company.
